how to be preppy

Preppy isn’t just a style- it can become a serious art. The clothes, the style, the attitude, the people…it can become more and more challenging with everyday. But if you want to be something, and you have it in you, it shouldn’t have to be that hard.

The attitude

1. be confident. Preppy girls are not shy-faced little lambs.(lolz “lambs”?) They are completely unafraid to be daring with their fashions and express their opinions.(I thought scene kids were the daring ones when it comes to looks) If you find yourself staring at the floor and blushing when you talk to somebody, this needs to stop-right away.(YA you cant be shy and preppy at the same time!! nooo way!!)  be confident within yourself. Don’t put yourself down - at the same time, nobody likes a brag. Strike the balance. Hold your head high, talk in a confident, quiet voice(I thought you werent supposed tobe shy…?), stand tall, and don’t be afraid to be yourself. Try not to become loud and annoying, just polite and happy with yourself. (not at all emo.)

2. Be classy. Being classy is not exactly a solid rule to becoming preppy. However, as preppy girls will never fall under the label of “sleazy”, “tacky”, “impolite” or “unpleasant”,(…..really? are you sure…..?) it is safe enough to assume that picking up some overall class will certainly up your preppy bar. Don’t fall into the waiting trap and become a full-on snob. Being classy simply means being polite, pleasant, and relatively well-educated.(Preps are usually classified as dumb blondes… I got this all wrong…) You don’t have to have been born a genius or beautiful to be considered classy. It is a skill and a trait that can be picked up quite easily.

3.Try some preppy sports. Again, you do not have to play a “preppy” sport to be considered preppy. It’s not a solid fact, and forcing yourself into sports will simply earn you the label ” poser”.(whoa there are even preppy posers?) However, sports can be enjoyable, especially if they fit into your preppy style. Some sports and activities you may want to consider: Rowing,(whats Rowing?) tennis,(I coulda guessed that one…) volleyball, (ya that sounds preppy) Lacrosse,(definately… even alice played taht right?) sailing (cuz your rich daddy can afford to buy you a boat..), Golf ,(lolz ) field hockey, ballet, cheerleading, (This should be number one on the list..)  and skiing. Don’t restrict yourself to these — just give them a go.

4. Be nice Preppy girls are never rude, (WHAT!!) or obnoxious,(WHAAAAT!) so don’t be. Being nice doesn’t mean sucking up to teachers or making friends with everyone. (does this person even know what a prep is???) It simply means being pleasant, smiling to everyone, and not participating in nasty activities such as gossiping or bullying. (are you kidding me? show me a preppy girl that doesnt gossip…) Being nice comes with practice, and after a while it will come naturally. With your newly gained confidence and class, try striking polite conversation with the neighboors. or helping someone with homework (nooo preps ask the geeks to do their homework…) Try not to take out negative emotions on others — it comes back to bite. (ya your not emo…)

5. Get the clothes. Although you won’t be able to preppy-up your wardrobe with just five dollars, it shouldn’t be too expensive to change your clothing style. Save up some extra cash and go shopping. Some popular preppy stores would include: Vineyard Vines, Polo Ralph Lauren, Lacoste, sometimes Belk, Macy’s. Many think that Hollister and Abercrombie have preppy items, but there are very few there. The only things that are preppy there are some conservative sweaters and polos. However, it is much preppier to wear Lacoste, J Crew, or RL polos. Don’t restrict yourself to shopping at these stores. Simply look around and draw some inspiration to create your own preppy style. Classic preppy clothes will never go out of style.Preppy clothes would include:

  • Bermuda shorts (khakis too)
  • Skirts.
  • Tanktops. (don’t use spaghetti strapped ones, they are trashy) (lmao “trashy” I thought we werent being rude?)
  • Short Sleeve Shirts.(no logo and bright colors)
  • Nice Jeans(Make sure they fit properly)
  • A wide varitey of shoes(Flip-flops, flats, tennis shoes.etc.)
  • Brand name things.

6. Accessories Accessories are extremely important, and will help pull your preppy look together in a polished, attractive style. Some great preppy accessories include:

  • Tote bags
  • Headbands
  • Ribbon belts
  • Jewlery such as diamond stud earrings, grandmothers jewlry, classy earings, Rings, Braclets, and nice pretty necklaces.
  • Anything that is bright, remember dress to impress.

7.Get the hair. Make sure your hair is clean(haha only preps clean their hair?) and well combed/brushed. Well-groomed, shiny and clean hair is essential — a lank, tangled and oily mane(are we horses now?) is not going to pass you off as preppy. Your hair should be kept up with.

  • Try a simple hairdo, or just leave your hair natural. Only straighten your hair on special occasions, because preppy hair is very natural.(yaa right) When you have styled your hair, add a few accessories. The essential preppy hair accessories are:
  • Hair ribbons — preferably in a bright color, and tied in a cute bow.
  • Headbands — also in a bright color, or a sophisticated, plain one. If you’re willing, try a simple print one.(If you have curly hair then ware a headband everyday)
  • A simple but pretty hair clip. If you have irritating bangs or a bump in your hair, brush them back and smooth it back with a pretty hair clip.
  • If you are in England and wanting to look preppy, have a side parting and sweep most of your hair over to one side, making sure you still keep the volume in it. (England..? where did that come from..? lolz )

8.Perfect the makeup. A preppy girl should always look natural and fresh-faced, not the smudged mascara. Mascara should be put on the top lashes and foundation-type. If you have skin promblems try not to smother them with makeup. Look after your skin by sleeping without makeup, washing your face everyday and applying, if needed, a healthy skin moisturizer.(hmm I am preppy cause I take care of my skin?) This way, you won’t need foundation or concealer. To enhance your eyelashes a little , try wearing just a bit of mascara.(but not the smudged kind..) A natural blush, such as light pink or bronze, will help you pull-off the natural beauty look. (a natural blush? doesnt that happen when something embarassing happens? or if its hot outside…) Finally, a lip gloss, always keep at least one lip gloss in your bag. If it’s a special occasion, then use lip stick, maybe layer lip sticks and glosses. Pluck or wax your eyebrows. (I pluck :D) Keep nails medium length and never get a manicure unless it is a special occasion or you are going with a friend. If so, then get a french or very light pink. Now you are truly, beautifully preppy!

(:D awsome!! like totally. )
